BACKSTREET

Biography

Backstreet has been together almost 20 years.  By now, we should have decided what type of music we want to play.  Instead, our music takes you on a winding tour of many different musical styles.  Band members have an equal say in the material we compose or choose, and we choose whatever we like.

Backstreet is a product of its environment.  From our home in the North Carolina Blue Ridge, we have been exposed to the rich heritage of traditional music that this region has fostered.  From the earthy piedmont blues of Blind Boy Fuller, to the driving bluegrass banjo of Earl Scruggs, to the old-time mountain fiddle tunes of Tommy Jarrell, an undercurrent of many North Carolina traditional influences flows through the band's music.  Throw in the added influence of country, folk, swing, and rock-and-roll and you have the recipe for a band that just can't stick with one genre.

Time has allowed the sounds of five musicians to blend into a single unit that expresses rich vocal harmonies and tasteful instrumentals. Backstreet's longevity has also allowed us to feed on one-another’s taste for musical eclecticism.

How do you categorize a band like Backstreet? Americana?...Acoustic roots?...Unplugged variety?…Ecumenical?…Confused? Whatever...Backstreet is kinetic sound energy personified.  We love music and it shows in our concerts and recordings.  Take nourishment and savor our musical stew. In spite of (and maybe because of) our musical wanderlust, we believe you will enjoy Backstreet.  Bon appetit!
