Biography Randy was raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. He began learning the guitar, mandolin and the roots of bluegrass and country music at an early age. He helped form his first band in high school. They played anywhere/anytime, from late night festivals to early morning church revivals. After college, Randy spent two years in Las Vegas with the US Air Force. This gave him his first experience of playing bars and casinos with the spaced-out unit 'Redeye'. His next move took him to England. He traveled throughout southern England performing with the country trio 'Borderline' for two years where he played pubs and clubs until his separation from the service. He remained in England for another eight years where he played with bluegrass diehard monster-banjo-thumper Roger Blackbourne & 'Monroe's Revenge', and other bands which featured five-string banjo ace Richard Collins. While still in England, Randy met up with, the Jeff Beck of bluegrass banjo, Leon Hunt. Together with Mike Prior and Steve Mazillius, they formed bluegrass band Southern Exposure. Southern Exposure successfully recorded, produced, toured and promoted their CD, 'Small Town'. Randy wrote five of the eleven tracks on the album. While in Europe, Southern Exposure opened for such talents as Allison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Mark O'Connor, Laurie Lewis, English Folk-diva June Tabor, ex-Fairport Conventioner- Jerry Donahue, and Tony Furtado. Randy's next move took him to Nashville where he lived for two years. While in Nashville, where he released an independently produced country CD, in which six of ten songs were self-penned. Randy has since returned to his native North Carolina. He has been involved with several recording projects. These projects include two Celtic CDs, and a bluegrass album entitled 'Shiner's Hollow', in which two of Randy's originals were included. Also through the Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society, Randy recently had the humble honor of singing the Kingston Trio version of Tom Dooley on a CD soundtrack for the local hit play "Tom Dooley", of which the The Wilkes PlayerMakers (thespians) received national attention when they revived the play in the summer of 2001. He has also written and recorded music for an educational government project. He is a member and longtime friend of the esoteric band, Backstreet, which released it's third project in February, 2002. Randy contributed three original songs towards this album. Randy completed a solo album in 2006 and is currently gigging hard and continues to write and record. Over the past eleven years, he has performed at MerleFest, which is arguably the premier Americana music festival today. The highlight of his career was being able to share the stage with legend, Doc Watson. You can reach him anytime to talk about music @ Tel: (336)927-2088 or Email: randygambill@hotmail.com!
